Keeping GLP-1 Learning Cases Private and Useful

How to design useful GLP-1 learning cases with an explicit privacy and authorized sharing process.

The practical question

A learning case can reveal treatment choices, medical history, pharmacy details and circumstances that identify a patient. HHS telehealth resources discuss patient privacy. An original approach for an educational GLP-1 discussion is to use a fictional case whenever it can meet the learning goal and to follow approved privacy procedures whenever actual clinical information is involved.

Define the learning question first. If the goal is to practice a handoff, the learner needs a relevant symptom timeline and communication task. Details about a particular address, workplace or family may increase privacy risk beyond the information needed for the exercise. A fictional scenario allows educators to control the information needed and introduce decision points that suit the learner level.

Original implementation approach

When authorized real information is used, confirm the approved setting, access rules and data handling process. Clinical records should remain within authorized systems. Educators should follow organizational requirements for deidentification, consent and review where applicable. Removing a name is one part of privacy consideration; combinations of dates, locations and unusual events may still make a person recognizable.

Discussion rules should describe the permitted use of the case and how learners submit their work. Provide a process for asking the facilitator about sensitive details. Before sharing a teaching example more widely, review it again for identifying information and authorization. Keep a record of the version approved for the intended audience so future educators can use the appropriate material.

Applied learning exercise

Write a fictional case for a GLP-1 pharmacy handoff, then ask a peer to identify every detail essential to the learning question. Remove unnecessary personal context and compare the two versions for teaching value. Next, review a fictional case that includes highly specific dates and a rare life event. Explain how these details could increase recognizability. Your final deliverable is a privacy conscious learning case and a short facilitator note describing the authorized setting for its use.

Use in practice

The fictional case approach supports privacy conscious education. Local privacy procedures govern any use of actual clinical information. Before each wider sharing step, review authorization, identifying details and the intended audience again. A well designed case preserves the decision task while limiting personal information to what the exercise requires.
